17 Grades. 17 Marks. One Journey Upward.
The V Series turns each bouldering grade into a chalk mark — a visual record of progression, obsession, effort and the moves that change us.
Every climber leaves chalk behind. The V Series takes that temporary trace and turns it into something permanent: a mark for where you are, what you have learned and what you are chasing next. If you would like to find out more about the V bouldering grading scale read our full article on it.
MORE THAN A GRADE
The V Series is built around a simple idea: every stage of climbing feels different.
V1 is about beginning.
V5 is about breakthrough.
V10 is about focus.
V15 is about obsession.
V17 is about redefining what is possible.
As the grades rise, the marks become sharper, more complex and more demanding — reflecting the physical and mental journey of becoming a stronger climber.
These are not official climbing symbols. They are original V Series marks, created to represent the experience behind each grade.
THE JOURNEY
V1–V4 — LEARN TO CLIMB
Movement, balance, confidence and the first understanding of the wall.
V5–V8 — LEARN TO PUSH
Commitment, problem solving, strength and the discovery of power.
V9–V12 — MASTER YOURSELF
Precision, focus, control and the ability to find your own solution.
V13–V16 — DISCOVER YOUR LIMIT
Tension, obsession, failure, resilience and the willingness to keep returning.
V17 — REDEFINE IT
The frontier — where the grade becomes more than a number.
V1 — BEGIN
The First Mark
The simplest possible beginning.
One hold. One move. One decision to leave the ground.
Every climber starts somewhere.
You don’t have to be good. You just have to start.
V2 — COMMIT
The Crossing
Two paths meet.
Climbing begins to require conscious movement rather than simply pulling yourself upward.
You start making choices.
Choose the move and commit to it.
V3 — LEARN
The Path
Progress begins to come from technique, experimentation and failure.
Strength might get you moving, but learning is what keeps you progressing.
Strength gets you moving. Learning keeps you moving.
V4 — FLOW
The Connection
Hands, feet, balance and movement begin to work together.
The wall starts to feel less like something you fight and more like something you move through.
Stop fighting the wall. Learn to move with it.
V5 — BREAKTHROUGH
The Spark
The first real breakthrough.
The move you could not do suddenly goes.
The problem you thought was beyond you becomes possible.
Progress happens one move beyond where you thought you would stop.
V6 — INTENT
The Strike
Movement becomes sharper and more deliberate.
Hesitation starts to cost you.
You learn that sometimes the move only works when you fully commit.
Move with intention. Half commitment rarely holds.
V7 — SOLVE
The Sequence
The wall becomes a puzzle.
Strength alone is no longer enough.
Body position, sequence, timing and creativity become part of the solution.
The strongest solution is often the smartest one.
V8 — POWER
The Bolt
Fast. Explosive. Decisive.
The mark represents dynamic movement, contact strength and the confidence to move hard when the moment demands it.
When control is established, learn when to unleash power.
V9 — PRECISION
The Edge
The margins become smaller.
A foot placed slightly wrong or a moment of hesitation can be the difference between sending and falling.
At the limit, centimetres matter.
V10 — FOCUS
The Line
One line.
One sequence.
One attempt.
The harder climbing becomes, the more important it is to remove distractions and focus only on the move in front of you.
Remove the noise. Climb the move in front of you.
V11 — MASTERY
Crossing Paths
Complexity returns, but experience makes it manageable.
There may be several possible sequences, but mastery comes from recognising which one matters.
Mastery is knowing which possibilities to ignore.
V12 — EXPLORE
The Unknown
At higher grades, solutions become increasingly personal.
What works for one climber may not work for another.
There may be no obvious answer.
There may be no obvious way. Find yours.
V13 — CONTROL
The Diamond
Power alone is no longer enough.
Strength must be combined with tension, precision and control.
Every movement has purpose.
Power without control is wasted energy.
V14 — LIMIT
The Collision
Technique, strength, confidence and determination all meet at once.
This is where climbing begins to ask a serious question:
How far are you willing to push?
Your limit isn’t a wall. It’s a question.
V15 — OBSESSION
The X
The project that refuses to go.
You fall.
You return.
You change a foot.
You change the sequence.
You try again.
Return. Fail. Learn. Return again.
V16 — BEYOND
The Ascension
The mark becomes more complex because the climbing has moved beyond ordinary expectations.
Progress at this level can mean weeks, months or years spent chasing a handful of moves.
The impossible becomes possible through enough impossible attempts.
V17 — LEGACY
The Final Mark
Not an ending.
A frontier.
V17 represents the point where climbing becomes less about following established standards and more about expanding them.
At the highest level, you don’t follow the path. You leave one behind.
WEAR YOUR GRADE
Every grade represents something.
A beginning.
A breakthrough.
A project.
A struggle.
A send.
A memory.
Choose the mark that represents where you are — or the one you are chasing next.
